The Zipper Society of Change Ringers
Founded 16th October 1993
Members of the Zipper Society have a mixture of heart complaints from a bypass Operation to a tumour and congenital heart disorder
The Zipper Society was formed on the 16th October 1993 at Guilden Morden, Cambridgeshire
In 1993 Andrew Downs applied for Guilden Morden for a peal and spoke to David Heighton and Dicky Furminger to see if they were interested to ring a peal and with the help of Howard Oglesby, Michael Morton, and Ray Daw we rang the first peal for the Society. A donation was made to the Zipper Club.
The idea of the Zipper Society was from Dicky Furminger who had a quadruple bypass and wrote to the British Cardiac Patients Association (Zipper Club) newsletter about ringing a peal with fellow bellringers who have had heart surgery.
Ray Daw from Stoke-on-Trent also wrote to the Ringing World asking the same question.
In April 1994 David Heighton managed to get 10 for a peal at Isleworth of Grandsire Caters. Other peals have been rung at Cherry Hinton, Meldreth, Burnham, Burton Latimer, Stoke on Trent, South Croydon, Kinsbury, Buckley, Harpenden, Southam, Sapcote, Oxford St Thomas, Aldershot, Milton and Loughborough Bell Foundry
The Zipper Society has also been involved with a couple of displays at the Papworth Hospital fete. The first was arranged by Dicky with a tower grab and quarter peals with members of the Zipper Society and family.ember The Cambridge District of the Zipper Club has a Carol Service every year at Trumpington and Members of the Zipper Society from all over East Anglia ring a quarter peal before the service with the help of the locals ringers.
In 1996 Ray organised a Quarter Peal for members and partners around Oxfordshire.
Four Quarter Peals were rung with methods ranging from Plain Bob Minor to Cambridge Major.
